Living in Plano: what renters ask us
Reviewed by our agents ·
Can I live in Plano without a car?
It's workable in two pockets. Downtown Plano sits on the DART Red Line, so you can reach Richardson, Mockingbird Station and Downtown Dallas by rail, and the district itself is walkable to restaurants, breweries and the farmers market. Legacy West is walkable within the district (offices, dining, Legacy Hall) but you'll want a car for groceries and most errands. Everywhere else in Plano is car-first.
What does a one-bedroom actually cost in Plano right now?
Budget $1,300-$1,800 for most one-bedrooms. East Plano and the Downtown DART district are the value end around $1,100-$1,400; West Plano garden-style communities land $1,400-$1,800; and the newer Legacy West mid-rises run $1,800-$2,400 before specials. Two-bedrooms add roughly $400-$600 to each of those ranges.
Where do we see the best move-in specials in Plano?
Lease-ups near Legacy West and along the Dallas North Tollway offer the deepest concessions, often four to eight weeks free while they fill. Established West Plano communities discount less but negotiate on deposits and admin fees in winter. We check current specials the day you tour, and every client receives an Exclusive Move-In Rebate on top of any property special.
How long is the Plano to Downtown Dallas commute?
Roughly 20 miles. Driving US-75 or the Tollway is 30-45 minutes at rush hour, 20-25 minutes off-peak. The DART Red Line from Downtown Plano to West End is about 45 minutes and lets you skip Central Expressway entirely. If you work at Legacy West, Toyota, JPMorgan or Liberty Mutual, most of our clients keep their drive under 10 minutes by staying west of US-75.
Is parking included at Plano apartments?
At garden-style communities in West and East Plano, open surface parking is almost always free; covered spots run $25-$50 and detached garages $100-$175 a month. Legacy West mid-rises charge for structured garage parking, typically $50-$125 per vehicle, so factor that into your monthly budget when comparing.
Which Plano grocery stores and daily errands are closest to apartments?
West Plano is dense with options: Tom Thumb, Kroger, Whole Foods (Park Blvd), Central Market (Coit and Park) and Trader Joe's near Preston. Legacy West residents lean on the Whole Foods at Legacy and Windrose Avenue dining. East Plano has H-E-B-owned Central Market alternatives and multiple Kroger locations along Parker and Spring Creek.
Do Plano apartments allow large dogs?
Most do, with breed and weight rules that vary by property. Pet deposits run $300-$500 with $20-$35 monthly pet rent per animal. Newer Legacy-area communities tend to include dog parks and wash stations; several West Plano communities sit on the Bluebonnet or Chisholm Trails for daily walks. Tell us your dog's breed and weight up front and we'll only show communities that approve it.
When should I start my Plano apartment search?
45-60 days before your move date. Plano inventory turns quickly, most communities only price units 30-60 days out, and the best specials are on units that are already vacant. Send us your budget and target move date and we'll shortlist availability that matches — our service is free to you.
